How the Multi-Stop Route Optimizer Works
Planning a trip with multiple destinations — whether for package deliveries, field service visits, client meetings, or sightseeing — quickly runs into the classic Travelling Salesperson Problem (TSP). As stops are added, the number of possible driving sequences multiplies exponentially. Trying to guess the shortest route by eye often wastes hours of driving and liters of fuel.
This app uses high-performance in-browser routing and mathematical combinatorial optimization. First, it queries distance and driving duration tables between all your requested stops using open map data. Then, it evaluates permutations and applies 2-opt local search heuristic algorithms to find the overall sequence that minimizes total travel time while honoring your start and end point preferences.
Rush-Hour Traffic Modeling
Real-world driving time depends on when you are actually on the road. A delivery run at 2:00 PM moves far quicker than one navigating downtown arterials during morning or evening peak rush hours. When you select a specific departure time or plan for a future date, the optimizer simulates time-of-day traffic congestion patterns:
- Morning Peak (07:30 – 09:30): Applies urban corridor rush-hour congestion factors, extending leg travel durations and shifting stop ETAs accordingly.
- Evening Peak (17:30 – 19:30): Compensates for evening departure delays and commuter gridlock.
- Midday & Off-Peak: Uses free-flow velocity profiles to predict reliable turn-by-turn arrival windows.
- Configurable Stop Dwell Time: Allows adding custom buffer times (e.g., 15 to 45 minutes) for unloading packages, attending appointments, or dining before departing to the next waypoint.
Exporting to Google Maps and Waze
Once your schedule is computed, you don't have to re-enter each address manually on your phone:
- Google Maps Direct Link: Generates a pre-formatted navigation URL that automatically locks in your optimized sequence with origin, intermediate waypoints, and final destination in Google Maps driving mode.
- Waze Step-by-Step Launcher: Because Waze deep links navigate to one waypoint at a time, our launcher provides one-tap navigation to your immediate next destination coordinates, transitioning seamlessly from stop to stop.
- Apple Maps & Text Itinerary: Generates native Apple Maps routing and a clean, copyable summary of arrival times and mileage for sharing with dispatch or clients.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this multi-stop route planner really free with no account?
Yes. This route optimizer runs completely in your browser with no sign-up, no subscriptions, and no limits. It uses open routing and geocoding engines, keeping hosting costs at zero.
How does the route optimizer choose the best stop order?
It calculates a driving time and distance matrix between all your stops, then solves the Travelling Salesperson Problem (TSP) using branch-and-bound and 2-opt heuristic algorithms to find the sequence with the lowest total travel time.
Can I lock my starting address and ending address?
Yes. You can choose between Fixed Start & End (start at depot/home and return), Fixed Start Only, Fixed End Only, or Let App Decide (unconstrained, finding the overall shortest sequence).
How does the app account for traffic when planning future times?
When you select a departure date and time, the app applies time-of-day traffic models that factor in weekday morning and evening peak hours, providing realistic travel durations and accurate arrival times at each stop.
How do I navigate the optimized route in Google Maps or Waze?
Once calculated, click 'Open in Google Maps' to launch Google Maps with all stops queued as sequential waypoints. For Waze, click 'Navigate in Waze' to open turn-by-turn navigation directly to your next stop.
How many stops can the app plan at once?
You can add and optimize up to 25 stops in a single route. Our client-side TSP heuristic engine optimizes up to 25 stops in seconds directly on your device without server lag.
Important note on navigation apps: Both Google Maps and Apple Maps impose strict external URL waypoint restrictions:
- Google Maps: Maximum 10 stops (1 origin, 8 intermediate waypoints, 1 destination).
- Apple Maps: Maximum 15 stops per navigation URL.
If your optimized route contains more than 10 to 15 stops, you can still follow your itinerary effortlessly using the single-tap destination links or by exporting the complete stop-by-stop schedule to your clipboard.
Are my addresses and travel plans kept private?
Yes. Your locations and routes are processed in your browser session and never saved to a database or tracked. No personal data or trip history is stored on any server.
